Unite: Unite’s reaction to blacklisting of workers

Unite’s joint general secretary, Derek Simpson, said:
“These revelations expose the rot that exists in the construction business. The use of blacklists shows just how determined employers are to aggressively exclude workers who they unjustifiably deem unfit to work in the industry.

“On the basis that many of the employers concerned will be winning billions of pounds worth of public and private sector work the government should announce an immediate investigation into the practices that exist in the industry. So far this year we have seen waves of unofficial action because of employer practices aimed at excluding UK based labour from even applying for work on certain construction sites. Now we have undeniable evidence that employers are using covert information to blacklist workers for legitimate trade union activities.

“UK based construction workers are under attack from their employers. The recent unofficial action across construction sites in the UK shows just how frustrated UK based workers are with the employers.

“Instead of investing in underhand practices which infringe basic human rights, these employers should be working with the unions to give our members some security of employment.”
