Unite: Tories oppose fair tips in Employment Bill

Len McCluskey, Unite Assistant General Secretary said:

“Government action to prevent unscrupulous operators in the hospitality industry from using the tips left for staff to pay the minimum wage is well overdue. Bars, restaurant and hotel workers across the country will be angered that the Tories are attempting to use the Employment Bill to prevent amendments to the law which will give them all of the monies left for them by customers. This is yet another example of the Conservative Party siding with wealthy business, over justice for workers.

“The campaign for fair tips has been successful in establishing the need for reform of the minimum wage regulations. This political opportunism will do nothing but allow greedy employers to continue to line their pockets with the money that customers have left for the hard working staff who wait on them.

“Unite is demanding an amendment to Regulation 31 sub section 1(e) to clearly state that service charges, cover charges, gratuities and tips left by the public go directly to the workers.”
