Unite’s reaction to the Government’s announcement on housing reforms

Unite Deputy General Secretary Jack Dromey said:

Last year saw housing go to the top of the political agenda, with the welcome commitment by the Government to spend £8billion on 3 million new affordable homes to rent and buy. Local authorities were pledged a central role including building new council homes. Now with the sub-prime crisis and a credit crunch, the role of the public sector is all the more important. Councils should build tens of thousands of new homes and buy empty homes to rent.

Public investment in housing should also be used to raise standards in the construction industry, with contracts linked to firm commitments on training and skills. We will now work with Government to offer training and hope to a generation of young people who the construction industry of the future will need.
