CIOT President’s themes green taxes and simplification

Green taxes and simplification are to be the themes of the incoming President of The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT). Nick Goulding will announce them at the CIOT’s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 13 May.

Simplification is one of the CIOT’s objectives and the focus of much of its work. The issue of green taxes is a new and growing area for the Institute.

Nick Goulding says: “The CIOT will be looking at how green taxes work, what impact they have and how the CIOT can contribute to the environmental debate. It is sometimes said that we should tax what we ‘burn and not what we earn’. I want the CIOT to examine how this would work in practice.”

The CIOT is holding a roundtable discussion to look at green taxes during Tax Advice Week in early June. The CIOT also has an Environmental Taxes Working Group that has responsibility for the Institute’s responses to consultation in this area.

Nick Goulding adds: “I would also like to pay tribute to the excellent work of my predecessor, Rob Ellerby.”

Andrew Hubbard becomes the CIOT’s Deputy President and Vincent Oratore becomes Vice-President.
