Unite brief on waste in the MoD and low pay

Union leaders representing thousands of low paid defence workers said today the waste identified by the Commons defence committee must be addressed properly but that immediate action must be taken to address low pay staff as skill shortages soared.

Jennie Formby, Unite national secretary and chair of the joint defence trade unions, said that with talks continuing aimed at securing a substantial pay rise and action to address the skills “time bomb” the MoD must address waste as a priority.

“There are currently over three hundred change programmes which cost a lot yet appear to deliver little change with consultants and private contractors the only ones who are benefiting” she said. “Meanwhile we represent people like the MOD guards in Northern Ireland who have the responsibility of being armed as part of their job but are paid as little as £13,000 a year.

“It is time ministers got a grip of what is happening and started by safeguarding jobs and paying key defence workers a living wage instead of pouring millions into the drain of reviews which never report.”

Demand equal rights for agency workers
British employment law fails to protect the country’s 1.4 million agency workers. The Temporary and Agency Workers bill would outlaw discrimination against agency workers and is backed by Unite, other unions and the TUC. On 22nd February, 157 MPs backed the bill, a momentous vote to end undercutting and abuse. But with government yet to back the bill, the fight for workplace justice has not yet been won. Keep pledging your support. Find out more on how you can get involved in the campaign.
