Unite: End minimum wage age disgrace, say young union members
Young members of Unite, Britain’s largest union, called for the abolition of different rates according to age to coincide with today’s introduction of new national minimum wage rates.
The Unite members, along with Young Labour, Labour Students and the National Union of Students (NUS), will be joined by Katy Clark MP (North Ayrshire and Arran). They will be meeting inside the Houses of Parliament to demand an end to the discrimination which is legal despite changes to the law last October that made it illegal to discriminate on the grounds of age.
“This is a first class campaign which deserves success,” said Jack Dromey, Unite deputy general secretary. “Trade unionism is about standing up to be counted and this is an issue that counts.”
Katy Clark MP, who will be addressing the young trades unionists, has pledged to put down an Early Day Motion next week when Parliament returns to highlight the issue.
Other speakers include Stephanie Peacock, Youth Representative of the Labour Party NEC, and Wes Streeting, Vice President Education of NUS.
