Humanists UK’s press statement: Ofsted report on illegal schools

Commenting on the release of Ofsted’s report on illegal schools, Humanists UK Education Campaigns Manager Dr Ruth Wareham said:

‘Illegal religious schools tend to be fundamentalist or isolationist in their outlook. They often teach children only a very narrow religious education leaving them unprepared for modern life. For too long they have been allowed to do all this with impunity.’

‘We have repeatedly raised serious concerns about illegal schools and the significant harm that children who attend these schools face, from the risk of abuse and indoctrination, to children being exposed to misogynistic, homophobic, and other extremist content. Too often, this has fallen on deaf ears.

‘Ofsted’s highlighting this grave situation is extremely welcome. As we have long recommended, Government should now legislate to protect children and close these schools for good.’
