Cameron and Clegg reveal their favourite kids’ books

David Cameron has opted for a suitably patriotic selection when asked his favourite kids’ book – while Nick Clegg went with something sillier.
The prime minister said his favourite children’s book was ‘Our Island Story’ by Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall, while the deputy prime minister opted for The Gruffalo, by Julia Donaldson.
The men were asked their pick during publicity for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s new production of Roald Dahl’s Matilda.
“When I was younger, I particularly enjoyed ‘Our Island Story’ by Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall,” Mr Cameron said.
“It is written in a way that really captured my imagination and which nurtured my interest in the history of our great nation.”
Mr Clegg added: “(As) an avid reader of books, it has been difficult to choose my favourite children’s book.
“Since having children, however, the book that I have read more than any other is undoubtedly The Gruffalo.”
A major influence on children’s literature, Mr Dahl started writing fiction in the 1940s. His most famous books, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, were published in the late sixties until the mid eighties.
