Poll: Most voters think cuts are happening too quickly

The public mood seems to be swinging against the coalition’s approach to public spending cuts, according to a new poll.
A Populus poll for the Times found 75% of respondents thought cuts to spending are excessive and happening too quickly.
The finding suggests voters are more convinced by Labour argument that the deficit should be cut more slowly and carefully.
Nevertheless, 53% of respondents said the government was handling the economy well.
Fifty-nine per cent said they were happy with the coalition overall, while 36% were against.
Economic pessimism was worsening, however, with many more voters thinking the “country as a whole will fare badly”. The number of voters who believe they and their family would personally fare badly was also up six points from June.
The gap between Labour and the Tories stood at just two points.
