Senior Liberal Democrat ministers are yet to make the same impact on the general public as their Conservative colleagues, research suggests.

A survey by the Sunday Telegraph newspaper indicated more people knew who the biggest names in the Tory party were than Lib Dem Cabinet minister – with the exception of deputy prime minister Nick Clegg.

Seventy-six per cent of the public knew the name of the Lib Dem leader, compared to 89% for David Cameron and 86.5% for London mayor Boris Johnson.

Most senior Tories attracted over 50% in terms of name recognition – with foreign secretary William Hague scoring 58.5%, justice secretary Ken Clarke on 51.5% and chancellor George Osborne on 52.5%.

By contrast the Lib Dems scored poorly. Vince Cable was recognised by 43% of those polled, but just 19.5% recognised energy secretary Chris Huhne and 16.5% recognised chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander.
