The new Cabinet met this morning to discuss departmental budgets and the Queen’s Speech.

In its first Tuesday meeting, ministers also heard from William Hague about his recent trip to the US and Madrid.

“The prime minister thanked colleagues for their work over the past week and said that the focus for this week would be to finalise the new legislative programme for the Queen’s Speech,” the prime minister’s spokesman said.

“This would be built around the themes of freedom, fairness and responsibility and would reflect the government’s priorities of deficit reduction, political and public service reform.

“The Cabinet discussed the ongoing work to agree £6 billion of departmental savings, where an announcement would be made on Monday.”

The Cabinet also received updates on the volcanic ash cloud’s impact on flights into and out of the UK and the continued violence in Thailand
