Conservative candidate Greg Hands has been elected for Chelsea and Fulham, with 24,093 votes.

His Labour rival, Alexander Hilton, won just 7,371 votes.

Speaking after the announcement, Mr Hands said: “The Conservative party has won in Chelsea and Fulham and we’ve won in the country as well.

“David Cameron has a mandate to form a government.”

He said the results announced so far indicated that this election was the biggest swing from Labour to the Conservatives since 1931.

“Across the country the result has been a disaster for the Labour party,” he said.

“They’ve lost more seats than any other Labour government in 80 years.”

Mr Hilton said the Conservatives still did not have a majority government.
