David Cameron will be interviewed by Jeremy Paxman after all, the Conservatives have confirmed.

The Tories had been reticent about whether they would be prepared to let Mr Cameron face a grilling from Mr Paxman, who has maintained his reputation as one of British journalism’s fiercest interviewers for years.

Last week Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg’s 30-minute ordeal with Mr Paxman, which attracted mixed reviews from political commentators, may have deterred the Tory leader further.

But after news that prime minister Gordon Brown had accepted the challenge – to take place on April 26th – pressure was piled on Mr Cameron to do the same.

The Telegraph’s diary column had quoted Mr Cameron as once saying of Mr Paxman: “If I want to be shouted at by an overpaid prima donna, I’ll join a Premier League football club.”

Now the Tories have confirmed the interview will take place, although an exact date has not yet been confirmed.
