Gordon Brown’s heavily-hyped interview with Piers Morgan over the weekend netted 4.2 million viewers for ITV.

Shown late on Sunday night, the interview featured the prime minister discussing his relationships and feelings upon the death of his daughter.

Viewing numbers began at 5.2 million, and slipped to 3.6 million by the end of the two hour programme.

Labour media strategists will be giving themselves a pat on the back this morning for the interview, which cast Mr Brown in a warm and favourable light.

The selection of the Piers Morgan’s Life Stories format was taken as a distinct attempt by Downing Street to show the British public Mr Brown’s personal side.

His personal ratings are usually far below David Cameron’s, who tends to use his family life to greater political effect.
