Ireland has voted yes to the Lisbon treaty, in a re-run of last year’s referendum.

About 67 per cent of those who went to the polls voted yes, as concerns over sovereignty and ethical issues paled behind the political and economic ramifications of a further obstacle to the European project.

The treaty allows for streamlined decision making among the 27 member states and for the creation of a president and foreign minister of the EU.

But the vote could create problems for the Conservatives, who are holding their conference this week, after eurosceptics in the party called on David Cameron to hold a referendum on the treaty as soon as he came to power.
