Unsolicited credit card cheques will be banned under a new white paper released today.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) also included measures to reform store cards.

The plans are intended to tackle Britains’ personal debt problem.

However, widespread bans are not expected.

The Department said “the importance of choice and a flexible market” had to be balanced with “personal responsibility and protection from over-indebtedness”.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said: “The government is determined to help consumers during the current economic difficulties. Many family budgets are under unprecedented strain.

“Our aim is to help consumers make better informed borrowing decisions,” he added.

Courts will also receive new powers to ban persistent rogue traders.
