Tories call for public Iraq inquiry

By politics.co.uk staff

The Conservatives plan to put more pressure on Labour over the Iraq inquiry, by calling for a public inquiry in their opposition day debate next week.

The move could divide Labour, by encouraging backbenchers to vote against the government.

Gordon Brown announced the inquiry would be held in secret earlier this week, highlighting national security concerns.

The demand will ratchet up the pressure on the government, given that the Liberal Democrats will almost certainly back the calls.
