The first gain for the British National Party (BNP) of the local elections has been announced in Lancashire.

They took the seat of Padiham and Burnley West from Labour, who finished second, with a majority of 201. The Liberal Democrats finished third with the Conservatives bringing up the rear.

As predicted, a low turnout has been helpful to the far-right party, with just 35.05% of eligible voters turning out at the ballots in the ward.
