Local Elections 2009

Local elections will be held on June 4th, on the same day as the vote for the European parliament.

Analysts are expecting a low turnout – now almost a tradition in local council elections. But Labour is almost guaranteed to take a battering. Previous expectations that the Conservatives or Liberal democrats could benefit from the governing party’s lack of popularity have been thrown into doubt by the expenses scandal, however.

Most experts are now predicting a tide of support for small parties, such as the Greens or the BNP. This is partly due to the general disillusionment with the main three parties following the expenses revelations and partly because voters often use local elections to protest against the main parties.
