Budget 2009: Protestors surround Treasury

By politics.co.uk staff

Protestors are gathering around the Treasury to demonstrate against the Budget.

Those gathering in central London say they want a recession plan which helps the people, not the banks.

“Millions of people across the country are being forced to pay for an economic crisis they had no role in starting with their jobs, homes and livelihoods,” said Owen Jones, the protest organiser.

Several Labour MPs are understood to be joining the protest, which will last from 17:30 BST until 19:30 BST.

Demonstrators had tried to gather around the building earlier this morning but were prevented from doing so by police.

“Meanwhile the bankers responsible for economic disaster have been bailed out with billions of pounds of taxpayers’ money,” Mr Jones continued.

“Today students, pensioners, workers and the unemployed will protest outside the Treasury to demand: ‘Where’s our bailout?'”
