Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has become a father for the third time.

His third son, Miguel, was born to his wife Miriam Gonzalez Durantez on Sunday morning at Kingston Hospital and joins his two older brothers Antonio, 7, and Alberto, 4, in the Clegg household.

Mother and son are said to be doing well.

Mr Clegg will now be taking two weeks’ paid paternity leave, an amount he branded pathetic last month when he said new fathers should be able to take a year off work.

He said in January: “One of the great crises for children, particularly for boys, is a lack or absence of positive male role models.

“And we’ve got legislation that says you can take two weeks off when the baby’s barely aware of your existence.

“If dads don’t get involved with their kids early on in a meaningful way, often they don’t remain engaged afterwards.”

Mr Clegg, MP for Sheffield Hallam, met his wife when both were studying at the College of Europe in Bruges.

When Antonio was born he took an extended period of paternity leave in order to allow his wife to return to work first.
