Queen’s Speech 2008: Environment

The government “will bring forward measures to protect the environment for future generations,” according to the Queen’s Speech.

The UK shall work towards protecting the environment alongside the EU, as part of an overarching cooperation policy also involving economic security.

The environment in the UK also received a boost from the marine and coastal access bill which will provide powers to designate marine conservation zones and protect zones from damaging activities.

Another feature of the bill will be a more effective delivery, regulation and enforcement in the marine area by bringing together functions in the Marine Management Organisation.

But there was little attention paid to the subject, with targets already having been set over the course of the last parliamentary year
