Lords reject government DNA database:

The House of Lords has rejected government legislation which would keep people’s fingerprints and DNA on a national database.

Peers voted 161 to 150 against keeping details such as individuals DNA on a database.

Peer Meg Hillier pointed to the 452 homicides detected because of DNA as evidence such a database is necessary.

Civil liberty groups argue this is another measure like ID cards which would make the state too powerful.

Britain already has the world’s largest database of citizens’ DNA, with over five per cent of the population on board and over £300 million invested into it.
