First blood for Tories

Conservatives gain Nuneaton and Bedworth

The Conservative party has gained control of Nuneaton and Bedworth district council from Labour.

In the first example of opposition gains from Labour on what could turn out to be a bad night for the government, the Tories overturned a Labour majority of six councillors.

The district council, in northern Warwickshire, had been on the Tory party’s list of councils to watch – despite having been controlled by Labour for 34 years. Half of its seats had been up for grabs.

Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate for Nuneaton Simon Rouse told politics.co.uk he was “absolutely delighted” by the news.

“It’s a fantastic result,” Mr Rouse said.

“What is particularly please is we offered a real choice for the people of Nuneaton and Bedworth – cleaner streets, safer streets, council tax kept low.

“We’re looking forward on delivering that.”
