Miliband and Rice visit Afghanistan

Foreign secretary David Miliband is in Afghanistan today on a joint visit to the Asian country with US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice.

Mr Miliband and Ms Rice are due to hold talks with Afghan president Hamid Karzai as tensions continue within Nato over troop deployments to the country.

The ongoing Taliban insurgency is placing considerable strain on senior Nato contributors like the UK and US. The latter reinforced the south of the country with 3,200 additional troops, even as countries such as Canada begin to threaten a withdrawal of their forces.

Analysts say Mr Miliband’s trip is a vital one for relations with the Afghan government, whose reconstruction efforts are perceived to be as important as improving security in the ongoing battle against the Taliban.
