Is the Christmas recess too long?

MPs’ Christmas

Parliament goes into recess on Wednesday December 16th for the Christmas break, and returns on Tuesday January 5th.

The break is criticised in some quarters as excessively long, with many observers suggesting the recess should be cut down to reflect normal business practises outside Westminster.

But parliamentary traditionalists insists the long breaks are necessary to give MPs time to work in their constituencies without the pressing needs of Westminster bearing down on them.

Most political analysts are treating Christmas as a much-needed break, before the build-up to the general election in January.
